Building the Future essays I am writing this because I feel there is something I must pass on, a terrific contagion that has the potential to change the world. I have experienced something quite beautiful and I want to ensure that others receive that same blessing. I am talking about optimism, not in the sense of believing everything will be fine and we should just sit back, or in the sense of believing everyone will work selflessly toward common goals, I am talking about a profound awe at the possibilities afforded us by the universe, the future. I do not believe one should live for the future, live for today and you live for today and tomorrow, but one of life's greatest pleasures is in overcoming obstacles and solving problems so it follows that in solving the problems of today we create a better future for everyone. I say that problems such as pollution, poverty, world hunger, oppression and anything else you can think of can be solved, perhaps it is youthful idealism but for what purpose do the young become idealistic other than to provide the world with a new outlook and ideas to create their future? If we restrict ourselves by claiming that something is impossible, what do we gain? If it is and we try to find a solution (not even at the implementation stage) what do we lose? Ideas are free, they cost us nothing and give us so much, they are the first step to creation. Ideas are the first step on the road to solving problems, and all you need to do to get them is to think. For instance, if I wished to end world hunger, a huge task never before successfully tried, so firstly I might think that the past is a bad place to look for a solution, because it is a problem never solved. So where do we look, well although the past won't give us our solution it might give some other ideas that will lead to ours, technology is also an interesting avenue to explore, both existing and non existing (this is how new technology comes into being). Samuel Adams essays Many famous people are usually considered to be successful in life from start. However, this was not the case with Samuel Adams. He struggled through the beginning of his life and was finally able to find a way to succeed. Samuel Adams was born on September 27, 1722 in Boston, Massachusetts to Samuel and May Fifield Adams. After graduating from Harvard College in 1740, Adams entered private business in which he was very unsuccessful. He repeatedly failed as the manager of a malt-house due to the fact that his attention was diverted by politics. Meanwhile, Adams attended the Boston town meeting in which he was an outspoken participant and earned the title of Man of the Town Meeting. When his business failed in 1764, he was able to pay attention to politics continuously. He was then elected as a member of the Massachusetts legislature. Adams established to Committee of Correspondence through which the Declaration of Colonial Rights, written by him, was published. Adams led the protest against the Stamp Act and was the founder of the Sons of Liberty. In 1773, Adams organized the resistance to the Tea Act, the Boston Tea Party, in which cargo of tea was dumped overboard. This resulted in the crea tion of the Continental Congress in which Adams represented Massachusetts for seven years. During his term in the First and Second Continental Congresses, Adams signed the Declaration of Independence. In 1775, he organized forces to fight in revolution. Adams succeeded in governing Massachusetts after the death of John Hancock and was re-elected three times. Samuel Adams died at the age of 81 years on October 2, 1803 in his hometown of Boston. Although Adams did have an extremely interesting life, it was not easy. His first 42 years of life were full of failure. This essay will discuss the reasons why the government should not and should regulate sugary drinks. To begin with, a reason against regulating sugary drinks is that it generates employment opportunities for the nation. Sugary drinks companies will need a high manual labor component in its various manufacturing process, therefore locals based near the factory are mostly recruited. This includes environmental as well as marine pollution. It can cause skin rashes, ulcers and respiratory problems. Also, food from marine sources will affect the health such as upset stomach. An example would be that ââ¬Å"The Non Government Organization found high levels of toxic chromium and other pollutants in the soil and water around five Coca Cola and Pepsico plants in northern Indiaâ⬠(Googleschorlar 2010). Thus, regulating sugary drinks reduces the risks of ones life that is affected by pollution. Finally, regulating sugary drinks helps a government minimize its health care costs. Higher health care costs directly cause increase in health insurance, hence minimizing the costs, helps the government use the remaining funds in the other ministry departments. The architectural and interior structure of the hotel is a good combination of the heritage of Pakistani culture equipped with the latest technology. The hotel is having nine cuisine restaurant and roof top swimming pool, providing all the luxury facilities and health clubs. The Serena Hotel Islamabad contain 387 rooms including suite with function halls to accommodate about five thousand people, and all other facilities that of a five star hotel. What is Facilities Operations Facilities operations and maintenance encompasses all that broad spectrum of services required to assure the built environment will perform thefunctionsfor which a facility was designed and constructed. Operations and maintenance typically includes the day-to-day activities necessary for the building and its systems and equipment to perform their intended function. In broad perspective the facility operation is merged with maintenance known as Operations and Maintenance (O M) because facilities cant be provided efficiently without it is properly maintained, therefore these two terms are discussed as one term (Facilities Operation and Maintenance). Facilities Operations at Serena As a five star hotel the Serena Hotel provide all the services to their customers to keep them satisfied and accomplish the organisational goals and objectives. To have good services they have a very structured Facilities Operations and Maintenance system, which involve all the dimensions of facility operations. Some of the major operations of this department in Serena Hotel Islamabad are following. Building Maintenance As described above that Serena is having a very good looking prominent building at a very attract full and expensive location at the city, so the hotel management is very much focused about the maintenance of the building, as this is the main resource of the business. Facility Mangers responsibility also include to do risk assessment and analysis, purchasing compulsory employers liability insurance if they dont already have it, ensuring equipment is fit for its purpose, testing, certifying and maintaining electrical equipment, ensuring computers can be used comfortably and easily, making sure the availability of first aid boxes are easily accessible locations at work premises, avoiding the use of trailing electricity cables to reduce the risk of fire and electric shocks, ensuring staff are suitably trained to work safely, keeping records of, and if necessary reporting,any serious accidents, illnesses or injuries experien ced by hotel workers. How can Serena improve the Facilities Operations As far as Serena is the best in providing facilities operations at their premises as compare to other competitors at hotels market, but I will suggest Serena that they is possibilities of improvement, as Facility Manager at Serena I will suggest the administration to take the following steps in order to improve the standard of facilities operations. At Serena Hotel there is a computerized system which I will suggest to improve it to Computerized Maintenance System (CMS). Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) enable the facility manager, subordinates and customers to track the status of maintenance work on their assets and the associated costs of that work. CMMS are utilized by facilities maintenance organizations to record, manage and communicate their day-to-day operations. The system can provide reports to use in managing the organizations resources, preparing facilitieskey performance indicators (KPIs)/metrics to use in evaluating the effectiveness of the current operations and for making organizational and personnel decisions. In todays maintenance world the CMMS is an essential tool for the modern facilities maintenance organization. I will suggest the administration to keeping in mind the current security situations at Pakistan, instead of having own guards, outsource the security, and also apply to the Govt of Pakistan to provide security commandos during the stay of elite in the hotel. The HR department is required to consult the facility manager in hiring the facility staff and operation staff. The facility manger is required to clearly identify the job descriptions and responsibilities of all manger and staff members in order to streamline the process, and provide the best facilities at the hotel customers and staff. Conclusion Facility managementis aninterdisciplinaryfield primarily devoted to the maintenance and care of commercial or institutional buildings, such ashotels,resorts,schools,office complexes,sports arenasorconvention centers. Duties may include the care ofair conditioning,electric power,plumbingandlightingsystems;cleaning;decoration;groundskeepingandsecurity. Some or all of these duties can be assisted by computer programs. These duties can be thought of as non-core or support services, because they are not the primary business (taken in the broadest sense of the word) of the owner organization. At Serena Hotel Islamabad the Facility Manger and Management of the hotel is very much focused about the facilities operations and maintenance. But some recommendations are provided for the management of the hotel to improve the facilities operations at Serena hotel.
